UV maps

After a lot of time, I have finally unwrapped the entire vehicle. Whilst doing it I started thinking of methods that can make the process faster. I remembered that apart from the body the rest of the vehicle can just be mirrored. So I unwrapped just unwrapped the right side then mirrored it. With that done I can easily add logos and writing to the vehicle, but first I will be adding the base colours on to the uv template and a subset of them are they for your viewing.

Modelling nearing completion

After getting over that brief problem, as stated before, I symmetried everything to create an impressive looking model. I started to set out the glass when I noticed that I would need to make and interior (which is what I am working on now) then I will add in other pieces to the model and unwrap it.
Confusion

Still with more time given to adding detail, I was still left puzzeled, so I decided to solve this by making the models appear as if they are connected when they are actually not. Whilst I was doing this, my poly count reduced even futher, so I was contemplating adding more detail like door handles or nuts and bolts. But I remembered that to smooth/round I would need to add turbosmooth which would double my poly count. If I have more time (and patience) I will model all those little sections, low poly and high poly then make a normal map for it in 3ds max. But for now I will add a symmetry modifier and finally start working on this vehicle with both sides.

Advancements

Whilst adding more detail to the whole model, I noticed that not all the views marry up. For example in one view their would be detail for the bars while the other would be plain. At first I didn't think this would be a major problem, however it did become rather confusing to see what is connected to what. So I am now at a stage of trial and error to see what works.

Basic rough

Since the vehicle is almost symmetrical, I am only modelling only half of it then applying the symmetry modifier. Here is where I am currently at, with a rough layout of one complete side, so I could see if everything was working in terms of my method and how it would look. The next stage is to start working into detail on this side of the model.
Early stages

With the plans in 3ds max I decided to go further into my research and get the specifications for the John Deere 950C Crawler Dozer, which are:- height 3300 mm and length 5690 mm.
With that I started blocking out the main parts of the vehicle, but low poly. At first, I thought I should give cage modelling a try, but because it is so blocky I used plannar modelling.

The new brief
After only just finsihing the last project, my tutors have set another one, only this time we are either to make a heavy construction vehicle, any vehicle from are own concepts or the university's race car.
For this project I have decided to model the John Deere 950C crawler dozer, because it is the only vechile I could find that I liked and had enough blue prints avaliable for me to make an accurate design.
The twist in this project, is that I need to make one version as if it just came out of the show room (beauty) and one rusted/beaten up copy (beast).
